Healthy Self Care: A Talk with Chynna of Lava Essentials
I'm a tension headache magnet. I've developed a pretty serious addiction to Coca-Cola and every time I try to go without it – bam! Tension headache. If I get lucky, a big glass of water and some Advil liquigels can set me back to normal but if I'm unlucky, that tension headache turns into a migraine and I'm crawling on my hands and knees under the covers, mumbling gibberish requests for cold compresses and caffeine.
I decided to try out essential oils after hearing rave reviews from multiple sources. A quick Amazon order and a sample kit of oils were at my doorstep before I knew it.
Peppermint essential oil quickly became my new favorite in combating headaches, but I loved using lavender and orange to help me when I was feeling stressed. After a while, I remembered my buddy Chynna, over at lavaessentials, had her own line of aromatherapy necklaces and I quickly made an order.
I wear my triangle necklace every day, dabbing it with either lavender or peppermint oil as my go to. It helps keep my headaches away, and keeps me feeling calm. Plus, it's super minimal and cute. I'm obsessed! I asked Chynna to answer a few questions about Lava Essentials and essential oils. So here we go!
How'd you first get into using essential oils? How did that develop into starting Lava Essentials?
I was introduced to using essential oils through a gal that I met on Instagram. She vaguely knew that I had some health issues and that I was looking for more natural approaches to healing my body. After bugging me for a while and explaining the difference between cheap fragrance oils (like I had used in the past) vs. high quality, pure therapeutic oils, I decided to give them a try! It was obviously a fantastic decision.
After about a month of using the oils, I wanted to find a way to enjoy my oils aromatically on the go. I knew jewelry was the answer, but after weeks of searching online, nothing really caught my eye - except for lava beads. Thankfully another instagram friend gave me some tips on jewelry making and I was able to create myself a necklace. I was already selling clothes and other items on instagram so I figured I would post some lava jewelry too. After that Lava Essentials just kind of happened, and super fast! With in a few weeks we had our own IG, Etsy and LLC. People loved the simplicity and originality. It has been such a wild adventure that I am so blessed to be a part of.
What was the best piece of advice you were given when you were just starting out?
I can’t say I was really given any advice when I was starting out, mostly because it all just kind of happened so quickly! I did however have unwavering support from my husband. But my advice for anyone wanting to start their own business from home is: prioritize your time wisely, hustle hard, stay true to yourself, push your creativity and stand out, because you never want to be the person riding someones coat tails - create your own path, and own it!
What is the biggest challenge in running your own small business?
Time management would have to be my number one, but I think a lot of people can also agree with feeling discouraged often. I find when I’m struggling with the latter, that it really helps to take a few minutes to reflect on how far I have come, even if it’s just an inch. Also to remember all of the wonderful reviews and encouraging messages that I have received from complete strangers that took the time out of their day to lift up my little business and bless my heart with their kindness.
What motivates you to go to work every morning? Or late at night? Girl, I watch your snapchat. You work some late nights!
I do love a good late night work session. Insomnia helps :) But I just love the quiet time, that I now get to spend working next to my husband, creating things I have a passion for. Which I wouldn’t get to do if I didn’t push myself and our business to grow. Also, knowing that people are excited, and even impatient (aren’t we all?!), to receive a package from us gets me excited and makes me want to work faster and harder.
What inspires your different collections? Do you have a favorite piece you've released?
I think I am most inspired by creating pieces that are functional yet simple. As a busy mom, those aspects are a must for me. I also love versatility… so the more minimalist and neutral I can create a piece, the better! Because who doesn’t love something that can go with almost everything?!
I also like to look at a lot of popular yet minimalist styles and ask myself, “how can I spin this so it’s still original and looks good with lava beads?”
My all time favorite piece would have to be either of our lava triangle styles. They were such a labor of love, and I think they really make our jewelry line stand out. Plus, it doesn’t matter what I am wearing, they always seem to match.
Finally – what's your go to essential oil blend?
My absolute favorite essential oils blend right now would have to be “Cheer” by Doterra. It’s a citrus and spice blend of Wild Orange Peel, Clove Bud, Star Anise Fruit/Seed, Lemon Myrtle Leaf, Nutmeg Kernel, Vanilla Bean Extract, Ginger Rhizome, Cinnamon Bark, and Zdravetz Herb! It’s warm yet subtly fruity scent is so uplifting and even comforting. I’m a big fan of blends, but I’d also never turn down a good Orange or Basil.
Thanks so much for answering my questions!
